Their are three types of mithila/madhubani paintings based on caste system-
- Brahmins – Brahmins are considered the top most caste among all castes in Hindu religion. Madhubani paintings made by Brahmins are rich in vibrant colors and impressions of Indian gods and goddesses.
- Kayasthas – Madhubani paintings made by Kayasthas symbolized fertility. Some of the most used motifs in Kayasthas’ Madhubani paintings are sacred religious symbols, flowers, animals and other natural shapes.
- Dusadhs – Dusadhs came from low caste who were not allowed to use religious and sacred motifs in their paintings. Their style of Madhubani paintings is also known as Godhana or Tattoo painting. They make abundant use of nature inspired motifs.
However, all the above styles were restricted to their respective castes long ago. Nowadays anybody can learn the art and pick any style regardless of his or her caste, creed or religion.
